Tax on a price you enter
Sales tax is a percent of a pre-tax price. This calculator multiplies the price by the rate you type and divides by 100, then rounds half up to the nearest cent. The total is the price plus that tax.
The Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board exists because state and local rates, and what is taxable, are not one national number. This page does not look up a ZIP code, a product category or a jurisdiction. If you need 8.25%, type 8.25.
Rounding
8.25% of $50.00 is $4.125, which becomes $4.13 of tax and a $54.13 total. 8.875% of $10.01 is $0.8883875, which becomes $0.89. 10% of $0.01 is half a cent or less, so the tax is $0.00 and the total stays $0.01.
What this does not do
The price is treated as pre-tax. The tool does not remove tax from a total that already includes it, and it does not stack a discount with the tax. Use the discount calculator for a percent-off markdown, then type the sale price here if you want tax on that amount. For the percent identity without money rounding, use the percentage calculator.
Example
A $100.00 price at 0% stays $100.00. The same price at 100% is $200.00 of total, with $100.00 of tax. A rate above 100% is rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Will this look up my local sales-tax rate?
No. You enter the rate. A state, city or special district can use a different
rate, and some items are exempt.
Can I start from a price that already includes tax?
Not here. Backing a tax-inclusive total out to a pre-tax price is a different
calculation, and this page does not do it.
Are prices sent to analytics?
No. Analytics may record that this calculator ran. The price and rate stay in
the browser.
