The score the final needs

The current grade covers the part of the course that is not the final. If the final is worth weight w, the work before the final is worth 100% − w. The target is:

current × (100% − w) + required × w

Rearranged, the required final score is:

(target − current × (100% − w)) / w

OpenStax describes a weighted mean. This page uses that shape with two weights and then solves for the missing score. The rounding rule is this page’s rule. It is not a school’s published policy.

The current grade is the grade before the final. It is not an overall grade that already includes the final. The page cannot detect a number that was copied from a grade book after the final was entered.

This page does not accept a list of assignments. That question belongs on the grade calculator. A credit-weighted average of letter grades belongs on the GPA calculator.

85%, a 40% final, and a 90% target

A current grade of 85.00%, a final worth 40.00%, and a target of 90.00% requires 97.50% exactly. A final score of 97.49% does not reach 90.00%.

When the final is 100% of the course, the required score is the target. A current grade of 50.00% and a target of 88.00% requires 88.00%. The current grade is not part of that result.

Rounded up, not down

A current grade of 86.00%, a final worth 30.00%, and a target of 90.00% is exactly 99.333…%. The displayed requirement is 99.34%. A score of 99.33% produces a course grade of 89.999%, which misses 90.00%. Half up would have left 99.33% and told you the target was reached. This page does not do that.

A requirement of exactly 100.00% is accepted. One hundredth below it is not enough. A requirement above 100.00% is not shown as a score you can earn, and the page does not invent extra credit. In the case of a 70.00% current grade, a 20.00% final, and a 95.00% target, the exact requirement is 195.00%, so there is no result.

Already covered

A current grade of 90.00%, a final worth 20.00%, and a target of 70.00% would require −10.00%. The page shows 0.00% and says the target is already covered. It does not show a negative score. A final weight of 0 is rejected, because there is no exam score to solve for.

Frequently asked questions

Is the current grade my overall grade? No. Enter the grade before the final. An overall grade that already includes the final answers a different question, and this page does not use it.

Why is the required score rounded up?A lower hundredth can miss the target. The page rounds a partial hundredth up so the displayed score is enough, and it says that the hundredth below it is not.

Are these grades sent to analytics? No. Analytics may record that this calculator ran. The current grade, the weight, the target, and the required score stay in this browser.
