Weighted scores
The grade is the sum of each score times its weight, divided by the sum of the weights. OpenStax Introductory Statistics describes a grouped mean as the sum of frequency times midpoint, divided by the sum of the frequencies. Here each score takes the place of the midpoint and each weight takes the place of the frequency. A syllabus weight is not a frequency OpenStax measured.
The weights do not have to add up to 100%. The page divides by the total you entered and states that total. It does not quietly rescale the rows to 100%.
This is not the GPA calculator and it does not solve for the score needed on a final. It also does not turn the percentage into a letter. No letter scale is defined on this page.
90% and 80%
A score of 90.00% with weight 40.00 and a score of 80.00% with weight 60.00 is 84.00%. Those weights add up to 100.00%.
A score of 100.00% with weight 30.00 and a score of 50.00% with weight 30.00 is 75.00%. The weights add up to 60.00%, and the grade uses 60.00% as the divisor.
A score of 80.00% and a score of 100.00%, each with weight 100.00, is 90.00%. The weight total is 200.00%. The page does not cut that back to 100%.
Half up at 84.005%
A score of 84.01% with weight 0.01 and a score of 84.00% with weight 0.01 is exactly 84.005%. The displayed grade is 84.01%. A rule that leaves an even digit unchanged would keep 84.00%. This page does not use that rule. The rounding happens once, at the displayed percentage.
What a blank row means
Leave both fields blank to skip a row. That is how unfinished work stays out of the average. A blank score next to a filled weight is an error, not a zero. Type 0 when the score is zero: 0.00% and 100.00% at equal weights is 50.00%.
A score above 100% is rejected. Extra credit, a dropped lowest score, and a curve are school rules this page does not invent. If a score should not count, leave that row out.
Frequently asked questions
Does this page assign a letter grade?
No. The result is a percentage. Schools use different letter scales, and this
page does not choose one.
What if my weights do not total 100%?
The grade still uses the weights you entered. The result states the actual
total. It does not pretend the weights were 100%.
Are the scores sent to analytics?
No. Analytics may record that this calculator ran. Scores, weights, and the
grade stay in this browser.
