One 4.0 scale

The average is the sum of grade points times credits, divided by the sum of the credits. On this page the points are:

Grade Points Grade Points
A+ 4.0 C+ 2.3
A 4.0 C 2.0
A− 3.7 C− 1.7
B+ 3.3 D+ 1.3
B 3.0 D 1.0
B− 2.7 D− 0.7
F 0.0

Indiana University publishes this table and calculates GPA as credit points divided by GPA hours. Only A+ through D− and F enter that average. P and S do not. Indiana also says a school’s degree GPA may differ from the university record.

The University of Chicago gives an A+ 4.0 in the College column and 4.33 in the Business column. A W there does not affect the GPA. This page therefore names its own scale. It does not claim that every college uses these points, and it does not offer a second table.

A+ and A are both 4.0. An A+ does not push the average above 4.0. There is no 5.0 honors, AP, or IB weight.

This is not the grade calculator, which averages percentages, and it does not solve for a final-exam score. A percentage is not converted to a letter here.

An A and a B

An A and a B, each worth 3.00 credits, is 3.50. The credit total is 6.00.

An A− worth 3.00 credits is 3.70. An A+ and an A, each worth 3.00 credits, is 4.00. The A+ does not add an extra 0.3.

An F and an A, each worth 3.00 credits, is 2.00.

Half up at 0.525

An F worth 1.00 credit and a D− worth 3.00 credits is exactly 0.525. The displayed GPA is 0.53. A rule that leaves an even digit unchanged would keep 0.52. This page does not use that rule. Course points are not rounded before the total.

Marks this page leaves out

Pass, satisfactory, withdrawal, incomplete, audit, and no-credit marks are not in the list. Leaving a course off the form is not the same as entering F. Zero credits are rejected, so a course cannot drop out of the average by giving it no credits.

Frequently asked questions

Does every college use this scale? No. This page uses the points in the table above. Another school can assign different points to the same letter, including an A+ above 4.0.

Can I include a pass/fail course? No. Those marks are not offered, and they are not counted as zero. Leave the course off the form.

Are the grades sent to analytics? No. Analytics may record that this calculator ran. Letter grades, credits, and the average stay in this browser.
